This exhibition was curated by the Deputy Director, Patricia Mears, and contains some 70 objects. We worked to represent five extreme natural environments such as outer space, high mountain peaks, the arctic circle, the African desert, and underwater exploration. The main attraction is the centrally located "space mountain" which was thought to be an abandoned space craft inhabited by aliens! The other environments were all specifically crafted with large blocks of cut foam to have either jagged, craggy mountain peaks or smooth shell-like and rippled surfaces depending on their location. The overall effect of danger, remoteness and the excitement of exploration was reinforced through lighting and sound effects.
